"7 international artists and filmmakers invited the nearly 30 participants to reflect on the power of images for 4 days.
The seminar, curated by Aily Nash, had as its starting point the summer exhibition of Tabakalera, dedicated to the French artist and filmmaker Eric Baudelaire.
In addition to the closed sessions, the seminar included film screenings open to the public.
Ane Rodríguez Armendariz, cultural director of Tabakalera, and Víctor Iriarte, responsible for film and audiovisual, have presented at a press conference the second edition of the international film seminar in Tabakalera. The presentation was accompanied by Aily Nash, curator of the same.
The seminar, aimed at people interested in film, art and creation, began on Thursday, July 6 and was developed until Sunday 9, in intensive sessions in which about 30 participants, along with the artists, invited filmmakers and curators, raised questions about the historical, political and personal essence of the images. In the sessions alternated projections, texts, presentations, debates and exchanges.
Likewise, the afternoon sessions at the cinema were open to the general public and served as an epilogue to the day and a point of work for the next day.
7 invited artists, curators and international filmmakers
Aily Nash was in charge of designing the itinerary of films, filmmakers and contemporary artists that form the backbone of the seminar. Nash is a co-curator of Projections (the New York Film Festival's films and videos section) and the film program at the Whitney Biennial 2017, as well as a consultant for the short film program at the Rotterdam International Film Festival.
On the other hand, as happened last year with the exhibition of the artist Yto Barrada, this second edition of the International Film Seminar established a direct relationship with the exhibition project of Tabakalera, in this case, with the exhibition inaugurated just two weeks before : The music of Ramón Raquello and his orchestra, by Eric Baudelaire.
"What can an image?" Is the phrase used by the philosopher Pierre Zaoui to reflect on the practice of this artist and filmmaker, and served as a title and starting point for the research proposed in the seminar: it was a matter of reflecting about the complex relationship that exists between the image and the creation of political and historical narratives; it was mainly about revealing, through the different uses of audiovisual language, its relation with the media and its formal experimentation, the power of images, something about which Baudelaire continuously works; his films Letters To Max or Also Knows as Jihadi, which are projected as part of the exhibition, are proof of that.
Eric Baudelaire participated as a guest at the seminar, and with him artists, curators and filmmakers who worked in the international context of art shows, biennials and festivals. This is the case of Naeem Mohaiemen, Maria Palacios Cruz, Belit Sâg, Susana de Sousa Dias or Akram Zaatari.
Screenings open to the public
From Friday to Sunday, screenings were made open to the public at the cinema and the sessions featured presentations by several of the guests. "
