‘The path is made by walking’ is a performance that has been presented in various cities such as Belfast, Ramallah and Valencia, and she brought a new interpretation created for Donostia 2016. The San Sebastian version of ‘The path is made by walking’ was a group action in favour of neighbourhoods, and the protagonists were the neighbours of Añorga, Intxaurrondo, Loiola, Martutene and Trintxerpe. A group of people left from each neighbourhood, and walked together and at the same time along the paths that took them to the centre of the city. ‘The path is made by walking’ was a symbolic project and, as they walked the streets, the participants marked the trace of their footsteps with sticky tape. This way, they physically performed the poem by Antonio Machado: ‘Wayfarer, there is no way. Make your way by going farther’; in fact, this activity took its name from that poem. Esther Ferrer wanted the marches that took part in the performance to reflect the diversity of the neighbourhoods.
